For “Mad Men” lovers, the historic Oak Room at The Plaza is offering a meal that will make you think nothing has changed since 1963 (wait, has anything?). Cheapskates who have never set foot inside The Plaza take note: on Sundays, $35 gets you a seat amid The Oak Room’s carved wood, blinking chandeliers and gold upholstery, where you can enjoy a three-course dinner featuring a big hunk of aged Meyer-natural Angus prime rib, slathered in au jus and horseradish cream.
You’ll also get fontina-laced “twice-baked” potato served in an individual copper pan, and coffee-flavored ice cream in a trio of mini-cones to finish. “People love prime rib,” says chef Eric Hara. “It’s something to try to offer some value to people who haven’t been here in a while.”
Why it beats Sunday brunch: Do we really have to go into this, people? These days, $35 barely buys two drinks at The Oak Bar. If you’ve always wanted to sample a life of luxurious, kept leisure, this is your chance. Just beware, should the waiter talk you into a “nip” of anything fancy to drink after dinner—that’s where you’ll likely rack up a whopping bill. And unless you’re a member of 10021 aristocracy, we’re doubting Daddy will be around to bail you out.
